A Bound Heart edition by Laura Frantz Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • I always promise no spoilers in reviews. The promise has never been as difficult to keep as it is with A Bound Heart because there is so much I want to exclaim and expound. When a book moves me this way, I am hard-pressed to remain quiet about all its many virtues. But I don’t want to ruin any of them for other readers. A Bound Heart is the kind of enduring tale on which book lovers and book clubs can reminisce for hours. Long after closing the pages upon Lark and the laird, I lay awake beside my snoring husband with an imagination full to overflow of their story world and ponderings on the ever Scottish theme of freedom. ‘Tis not the first time, Laura has left me thus. I pray it shall not be the last. (And no, I don’t actually talk like that, only while under the influence of Laura Frantz magic.)
  • My Scottish heart loved the beginning of this book. The setting on the Isle, the Scots speech, and all of the other little cultural details painted a beautiful picture of a land my heart longs for. So the beginning third of the book was a really quick read. The endearing details along with the exciting occurrences with the smuggling, stillroom, Magnus, and Isla made for an enthralling adventure. The second third of the book was interesting as well. The journey on the ship, the uncertainty of their lives ahead, the budding romance, and the nefarious schemes kept the pace moving along quite well. I loved the addition of Larkin to the story and how he molded into Lark's life and kept her safe and from falling apart. The third and final section of the book was a bit of a stretch for me. There were things going on but they did not have the same adventure and gravity as the parts before. Along with Lark, my heart longed for the times in Scotland, which held the most appeal. Lark and Magnus' romance is a patient and distant one. Still, I wish we had more time to live within the discovery of their romance, really building up their feelings for each other so the reader can feel it along with the characters. Even though they made declarations, I wanted to infuse the other senses along with it to really experience the longing along with them. The romance did build at the very end of the book, but if it had been built a little sooner, the reader would have better felt their longing for each other all through their separation and would have been more pulled to see them back together. It is also interesting how in each of the three sections there is a man who wants to have Lark for their own but cannot because her heart belongs to Magnus. The ending was sweet, and I loved how you could really feel Magnus and Lark's feelings and commitment to each other. Their plans and position for their future was very tenuous, so I didn't really like how they were left with that future. They spent a lot of the book talking about how people die when they go to the Caribbean, so it would have been nice to have an epilogue about them living in Virginia safe and sound after their years on the tropical island. That would have made the story feel completely wrapped up. Otherwise, there were a lot of elements with Lark's stillroom work, beekeeping, lifestyles of the time in Scotland, on a ship, in Virginia, and in the Caribbean, and laws of the time that kept interest throughout the story. I enjoyed this look into different pieces of the world during such a tumultuous time.
  • A slow start and no satisfying closure. So many unanswered questions. Did Osborne really capitulate so easily to their marriage when he had recently granted betrothal privileges to powerful plantation owner? Would her new husband and former laird really risk bringing her and the infant to Jamaica knowing the health threat was so great-risk Yellow Fever which nearly took his own life? That last chapter left me smh.
  • I am a HUGE Laura Frantz fan and have given all of her books before this one 5 stars. She is a master story teller and her attention to detail, especially historical detail, give all of her books incredible depth and interest. This is a sweet story, and includes all of the detail and good writing Laura is so wonderful to provide.

    But Not Her Best
But, this story began to wane for me about 2/3 of the way through. It became very predictable and uninteresting. I rushed through the last part of the book to get to the end.

    SPOILER ALERT!
The end seemed to me to be where she could have taken the story much earlier and had a much better finish to the book. Magnus and Lark could have wed and gone on to Jamaica, and we she could have developed a better ending with them undertaking the challenges there, working through them together.

Even though it's not her best, I still recommend it. All of her books are top notch, this one just isn't quite up to the standard of the others.
  • I expect Laura Frantz’s books to be captivating and deeply affecting. A Bound Heart is no exception. The two main characters, Lark MacDougall and Magnus MacLeish come to vivid life on the page and quickly captured my heart. And the Scottish setting of the story’s beginning is so evocatively and tenderly portrayed that I wanted them to find a life together there forever. But that becomes impossible when a deep injustice shatters their world. And even when granted the opportunity to make a new beginning in America, they face difficult challenges that keep the reader hoping against hope for the fulfillment of their dearest desires.

The unwinding of Lark’s and Magnus’s story and that of little Larkin, given into their care as an unexpected blessing amid their thorny troubles, carries readers along to a soul-satisfying end. For God’s good purpose hovers over all, guiding each one surely to the safe haven so long yearned for.

Tokyo is rightfully known around the world as one of the most exciting places to eat on the planet. From subterranean department store food halls to luxurious top-floor hotel restaurants, and all the noodle shops, sushi bars, and yakitori shacks in between, there may be no other city so thoroughly saturated with delicious food. Tokyo Stories is a journey through the boulevards and backstreets of Tokyo via recipes both iconic and unexpected.

Chef Tim Anderson takes inspiration from the chefs, shopkeepers, and home cooks of Tokyo to showcase both traditional and cutting-edge takes on classic dishes like sushi, ramen, yakitori, and tempura. Also included are dishes that Tokyoites love to eat with origins from abroad, like Japanese interpretations of Korean barbecue, Italian pizza and pasta, American burgers and more. Tim tackles his food tour of Tokyo from the ground up, with chapters broken down into LOWER GROUND FLOOR Tokyo on the Go (Department Basements, Subway Stations, and Convenience s); FIRST FLOOR Tokyo Local (food traditional to Tokyo); SECOND FLOOR Tokyo National (food traditional to Japan); THIRD FLOOR Tokyo Global (Japanese food with an international twist) FOURTH FLOOR Tokyo at Home (Japanese home cooking); and, FIFTH FLOOR Tokyo Modern (experimental Japanese food found in high-end hotel bars).

With Tim's easy-to-follow recipes, this is make-at-home Japanese food, authentic yet achievable for the home chef – without cutting corners. The real thrill of eating in Tokyo is in the sense of discovery – of adventurous curiosity rewarded. And that may come in the form of an unexpectedly good convenience store sandwich, an 'oh my god' sushi moment, or just the best damn bowl of ramen you've ever had. With Tokyo Stories you can explore Tokyo and discover its incredible food without leaving your home kitchen. Featuring over 90 recipes, all set to the backdrop of Tokyo location shots, this is essential for the Japanophile in your life.

"Tim Anderson is my Japanese guru. His first two books Nanban and JapanEasy changed my whole view of Japanese cuisine. Two of my favorite dishes from Nanban are Chicken patties (Tsukune) and Fried marinated chicken with vinegar sauce and tartar sauce (Chicken Nanban) that I turn to time and again because they are packed with flavor.
With each book, he further transforms this ancient cuisine into something that is hip, fun and exciting. I wouldn't think it possible for Anderson to keep churning out imaginative and inspiring cookbooks, but the man makes it seem effortless. Tokyo Stories is an explosion of color with vibrant illustrations, stunning photographs of both the dishes shared as well as Tokyo itself. This is an Eat Your Books Digital title."

Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women Sarah Bargiela Sophie Standing 9781785925665 Books Reviews

  • The full title of this graphic novel should give you a pretty strong idea of what it covers. It’s all about autistic women, their differences from the typical expectations of autism, and how that results in them blending in better (and thus being less likely to be identified and/or diagnosed).
There were a lot of things I didn’t know about autism in women that I learned while reading this. It was incredibly informative, while still being very approachable.
I like that they chose to talk about the subject in a visual way, as it made everything feel more casual and comfortable to talk about. It felt less like I was reading a textbook and more like I was reading about real people (which was actually the case).
I found this to be a very informative, and enlightening graphic novel. It was nice to take a break from reading fiction and instead learn something true and important.
  • Camouflage by Sarah Bargiela is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in late February.

Exploring concepts through the experiences of 4 autistic women in comic book form, like the belief that girls and women are less likely to be diagnosed due to their brains supposedly wired for empathy and being able to echo social cues more effectively; consistency in habit and routine; seeking/avoiding sensory activities and having keen interests; internalizing emotions and masking one’s identity in order to appear normal; developing assertiveness during friendships and relationships; and finding community within their diagnosis. The palette offered heathered/spotty pastel hues with focal points of coral, hunter green and black, and, altogether, it was too short and I wanted more!
  • Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is a completely necessary teaching tool, for kids and adults alike. This nonfiction guide beautifully and intellectually illustrates how autism manifests in women and how women’s experiences are often completely different from men’s.

The artwork is very modern and adds a lot to the story. The style makes it easier to understand these women’s experiences through a variety of panel layouts and a combination of dialogue, visual aids, and artistic representation of the facts.

The stories in Camouflage are extremely empowering, and as a guide, this is a great start to understanding the complexities of autism.

NOTE I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
  • While the text in Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is probably comparable to a magazine article or blog post in length (and therefore is a very quick read), the illustrations fill out the information and help to humanize this topic.

We get to hear from a few different autistic women about some of the challenges and differences that they face in life. There is also some information about the differences in the ways that autistic men and autistic women present their symptoms, which can lead to women being underdiagnosed.

Despite its short length, I found it fairly informative and a good resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the gender differences in autistic people, and the lived experiences of autistic women.

(Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.)
  • This is well-researched, impeccably presented GN about how autism can present itself in young girls and woman. Through its clever use of illustration to help readers understand concepts and words they may be unfamiliar with, to its inclusion of stories from those with Autism--this book has helped me understand a topic I believe I knew all too well. This GN toes the line between presenting readers with enough information to feel like they understand more about the topic without feeling bogged down too much scholarly language. As a twin to a sister with Autism, I feel like I can understand her better and that's an invaluable gift.
  • I didn't know what to expect going into reading this and I came away surprised. I learned a lot about autism in women! I would give this book 3.5 stars.

This was a great medium for teaching about the subject matter and I enjoyed the anecdotal approach. One big hang-up I have about the book is how gender essentialist it is about sex differences. The author makes overarching generalizations about the societally influenced behavior of cis-men and cis-women (assumed that this is what she is talking about, as she does not indicate otherwise) without many citations to support these assertions. I almost stopped reading because of the generalizations - aren't we past an antiquated science supporting the separation of gender into two categories?

Other than the gendered nonsense, I enjoyed this book and the information it offered.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of Camouflage and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
  • Obviously there’s only so much information that you can fit into a fifty page graphic novel, but I think this is a great jumping off point. Bargiela uses research studies with the personal experiences of women diagnosed to be on the spectrum to bring us informative graphic and stories about women with autism. She covers the difference between behaviors in men and women, likely a cause for why women may be under-diagnosed. I read a similar article in the past about the difference in behaviors for ADHD and I find it interesting to compare the differences (and also distressing that women can get ignored because they don’t check the “usual” boxes). This quick, easy to digest guide is a good starting point for understanding different women. Thanks to NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for the eARC.

A Politics of Love A Handbook for a New American Revolution Marianne Williamson 9780062873934 Books Reviews

  • If you feel hopeless about the state of politics and current affairs, or worried about how we are all getting along, there is so much in this book worth exploring. I was pretty blown away by it and really can't speak highly enough about it. The ideas within offer a powerful prescription for America and the world. While politics is a core theme,it also has a lot of heart and is really a roadmap for our collective lives as a common humanity. It speaks to much deeper themes about what it means to be alive and in relationship to one another. I got misty eyed many times, and felt the elation of possibility for what we can all do together — over and over. It’s both practical and inspiring.

I think this is one of Marianne’s best written and most inspiring books yet. In addition to the emotional and spiritual themes relating to the human condition, she writes about many of the hot button issues we face immigration, climate change, the assault on democracy, racism, corporatocracy, the political divide, war and peace, and even Trump, among many other topics.

While she can be fierce in what she is calling out, throughout it all, she brings big heart, a lot of love and compassion. It’s a real blueprint for how we can make not only tangible changes, but how we can (and should!) be working together in deeper and more loving ways as we make the changes.

I wish that every person in America, and especially every politician, were required to read this book. If they did, humanity would really blossom. Go Marianne!
  • I just got this book, I have many of Marianne’s books, and have been to four of her small weekend retreats. I started reading yesterday, I had a hard time putting it down. The first chapter really is some of her best writing, on to three more and wow, everyone should read this book. I will settle back in tomorrow for another four or five chapters. I feel like she is speaking to me.
  • This book is written with deep insight and wisdom - an answer with depth for these times. As Marianne Williamson says these are serious times and we need to go deep within ourselves and within the problems we are facing in order to respond.
  • I first heard Marianne Williamson speak at the Universalist Unitarian Church on the upper west side of Manhattan in the early 80’s. I paid $7 to sit on a folding metal chair in the church’s auditorium. She introduced me to A Course in Miracles. I was awe struck. I went back to see her almost every month after that for years. Having begun my own spiritual journey, I found that, a few weeks before she was due back in New York, I would be challenged with a dilemma that I couldn’t resolve. Always, at her evenings in that auditorium, I would receive the guidance that I needed to understand the issue I was being faced with. I felt like she was speaking just to me, yet I understood that everyone in the auditorium felt the same thing. It’s the miracle of A Course in Miracles, and Marianne’s gift.

It was a time when those of us living in metropolitan areas, and working in what are known as the “glamour” professions, suddenly started seeing people we knew and cared about start dropping dead for no explainable reason. It was the time when a disease which didn’t even have a name yet was changing everything and only a small group of people even admitted that it was happening. Marianne gave us a place to come together and share our fears and our grieving. She says of that time, “Unless you’ve been in a war zone, you can’t truly understand what those days were like.”

I remember the evening when she told us that her book, A Return to Love was about to be released. “If you’ve been coming to hear me speak,” she said, “you don’t need to buy it. You’ve already heard everything that’s in it.” And then she went on Oprah and she became famous.

When I went to hear her speak after Oprah, I watched the energy descend from above into the top of her head and out through her throat chakra to the audience. By then I was also a little skilled at the channeling thing, so I knew what I was looking at. She was perfect that night, in my opinion. She hit every note the “Invisible Helpers” sent through to her and every note connected to the audience perfectly. She was a perfect 10—and I was bored. I drifted away, only to revisit her at lengthy intervals to check in. Tears to Triumph was one of those reconnecting points. I loved it.

Now she’s running for president and has released A Politics of Love simultaneously. I tend to be a skeptic. But as I read A Politics of Love, I once again got an answer to a dilemma I was pondering. The answer this time is that there is no answer. There is only choice. We have come full circle. Do we choose love or do we choose fear? She spells it all out in the concise, powerfully-charged phrasing that is her trademark.

After all these years, her power is still also that she can be as self-effacing as she is inspirational. She tells us “My mother used to say, ‘Count to ten before you speak.’ Sometimes I need to count fifteen.” And there was my answer Count to fifteen. Thank you, Marianne, and I’d really loved to see you in the debates.

(InannaWorks.com received a free review copy of this book.)
  • Marianne Williamson is the truly transformative candidate for President of The United States in the upcoming 2020 election. Her new book, "A Politics of Love," lays out the platform for her candidacy. It is nothing less than a progressive blueprint for rededicating this country towards the principles it is supposed to espouse. Ms. Williamson is swiftly becoming the one candidate who can offer the starkest contrast between the politics of we and us versus Donald Trump's politics of me and I. All voters owe it to themselves to read this book and go to Ms. Williamson's campaign website, Marianne2020.com and see for themselves what is possible for this nation.
  • Bravo, Marianne!! Beautiful words!
Powerful message! No other candidate has the answer.
It's all about LOVE. May we all join together and make LOVE the priority in our politics and daily lives.
    Together we can witness miracles!
  • Marianne very powerfully articulates how to move down the path to reclaim our democracy. It is a call to action for all of us to live from our Highest values and put the power of love to work. Love is the antithesis of fear which has been running the show too long. It’s time to name the root problems in our society and take radical action to fix them. Any other option is untenable.
  • Thank you for this Marianne Williamson! So beautifully articulated and expressed! This book is a call to re-member in courage and strength the essence of our being as individuals and community! All Good things belong to us and I want to live and breathe this rather than defaulting to negative, critical or self righteous thoughts and actions. Thank you! Beth Easter

How silver influenced 200 years of world history, and why it matters today

This is the story of silver's transformation from soft money during the 19th century to hard asset today, and how manipulations of the white metal by American president Franklin D. Roosevelt during the 1930s and by the richest man in the world, Texas oil baron Nelson Bunker Hunt, during the 1970s altered the course of American and world history. FDR pumped up the price of silver to help jump start the US economy during the Great Depression, but this move weakened China, which was then on the silver standard, and facilitated Japan's rise to power before World War II. Bunker Hunt went on a silver-buying spree during the 1970s to protect himself against inflation and triggered a financial crisis that left him bankrupt.

Silver has been the preferred shelter against government defaults, political instability, and inflation for most people in the world because it is cheaper than gold. The white metal has been the place to hide when conventional investments sour, but it has also seduced sophisticated investors throughout the ages like a siren. This book explains how powerful figures, up to and including Warren Buffett, have come under silver's thrall, and how its history guides economic and political decisions in the 21st century.

"I read the same history books you did, which briefly touched upon the "Cross of Gold" of the late 1800's, the silver-versus-gold lobby, and the Great Depression confiscation of gold. I've lived though the disappearance of silver coins as we prepared to go to the moon and of course the scandal of the Hunt brothers cornering the silver market in the early 80's.

Most historical accounts are abbreviated gibberish, because the writers have no idea what they are writing about.

Alas, The Story of Silver not only is written by someone who knows what they are talking about, Mr. Silber also provides the historical context of what was going on. He adds just enough history and context to render each chapter to be a captivating episode in our nation's history.

I think a general reader will appreciate this book, although they might breeze through a few of the chapters that are of more interest to a silver bug. But for any current or ex coin collector, bullion investor, financial historian or even someone who likes history, this is worthwhile. I finished it in less than 3 days - that tells me it held my interest.

And sometime in the month after you read it, you will be able to drop the phrase, "The Crime of 1873" in a conversation with your banker friend(s), express shock they have no idea what you are referring to, and cleverly force them to buy drinks after your claim is google-verified . It's like a price rebate guarantee. What's not to like?

Final note, you will wonder why, if your old text books were so woefully inadequate regarding the "Cross of Gold" and Williams Jennings Bryant, then what else did they completely mangle?"

  • As a retired Foreign Service Officer, economist, and numismatist; I find Dr. Silber's book, The Story of Silver, fascinating and educational. It's reminiscent of an interdisciplinary approach to economics used by Walter Rostow used at UT Austin while I was a graduate student there several decades ago. In an age of fiat money, and now, even digital currency, one forgets that for a millennium and a half, gold and silver played a prominent role in the evolution of money as we know it today.

As economists, we often have a tendency to quantify things like supply and demand of a given commodity or service in an effort to find price equilibrium. Dr Silber shows us there is another dimension when it comes to the "white metal," the interplay of market forces with varied national interests, policy objectives, institutional machinations, and even personality clashes. As a retired Foreign Service Officer, with over 30 years experience in nine countries, I have an appreciation for the dynamics of these moving parts.

I am old enough to have witnessed the spiraling price movements of silver in the late 1970's and 2009 and the havoc it played on the numismatic community. The Story of Silver fills in a lot of historical cracks in the lore of silver these last two centuries. Written for the layman, the book is an easy read, laced with the occasional wry comment as the author navigates what could be a rather dull subject for many. If you really want to know what happened to silver and the role it played in our economy and history, this is the book to read.
  • Silver always seems to pale next to gold at best silver is a lining, but never a fever--and it is always, almost non-chalantly, at hand, either as currency or cutlery. And yet, it intersects our lives in peculiar ways. My father-in-law used to tell dramatic stories of inflation in China and my mother-in-law of how the imperial Japanese invaded their country; I remember my grandfather's stash of old silver dollars in his rural drugstore, and reading about silver (and the Hunt brothers) in the dark days of inflation in the late 1970s--not to mention learning about William Jennings Bryan historic crusade for stabilizing the US dollar. In this fascinating history, William Silber explains how one precious metal underlies all these events. Those with an interest in history or in commodities will find this book a great read and one that shows how following a subject, thoughtfully and with detail, from a particular frame of reference can open up new ways of seeing the world. Highly recommended.
  • I've been in the precious metal business my whole career and thought I knew the history pretty well. But there were a number of eye-openers, especially the role of silver and US policy regarding China and WWII
  • I always enjoy creative perspectives on history and this book does not disappoint. Silber tells the story of silver and events involved around it. He starts from the beginning of the American republic with various opinions on the metal from people such as Alexander Hamilton, continues through William Jennings Bryan famous speech at the Democratic National Convention, spends a lot of time with the Hunts (as would be expected) and ends with current prognostications, including Warren Buffett's venture into the metal.

He explains silver's unique role as both a metal used for practical purposes as well as a store of value. Historically this led a few times to people exchanging their silver items for cash as the price increased, further increasing the price. While everyone is familiar with the metal, this book will surprise the reader with how many significant events on the world stage involved the metal.

The most interesting part of the book is the subject most people probably first think of when seeing this book- the Hunt brothers and their fascination with the metal. I never knew too much about the episode, but always thought the Hunts were a wealthy oil family and the brothers tried to corner the market and ended up in bankruptcy. While this covers the gist of it, Silber provides many fascinating aspects of the story. I had no idea that the government basically changed the rules midstream in order to fight off the buying frenzy and the role the government had in their bankruptcy.

Highly recommend this easy read on a common topic presented in a unique manner.
